Tips for choosing Cabinet Hardware

Updating the look of your space does not have to include a complete remodel. Sometimes a small change can make a big difference. For example, cabinet hardware can have a huge impact on the look and feel of your room. If you are happy with your current cabinets but are looking for a change, consider switching to a different style of hardware. Here are some tips to keep in mind while choosing cabinet hardware.

One thing to consider when deciding between styles of hardware is the design of the room as a whole. Especially if the hardware is the only piece you’re changing, you will want to choose a style that complements your aesthetic. Keep in mind the shapes in your room. Are the lines throughout the room straight or curved? Similarly, the color of the finish should complement the colors of the room, especially the cabinet color. If you choose metal hardware, make sure the finish you choose does not clash with the finish of your appliances and fixtures. Matching the same finish can help keep a cohesive design scheme throughout the room. Think long term as well. While a trendy eccentric design may pique your interest now, will you like it just as much in a couple years? Even though it can be a simple change, you should choose hardware you will likely not want to change for a while.

Another aspect to be mindful of is functionality. The look of your hardware affects how you view your space, but how you feel while using your space has a greater affect on your experience. How does the knob or pull feel in your hand? For example, a beautiful ornate knob on the cabinet you open the most may decrease in beauty if your hand is not comfortable using it. While you may be willing to sacrifice discomfort initially, you may grow to resent that decision after a few months of having difficulty opening your cabinets or drawers. Take into account the size of the knob or pull and the feel of the material itself. You may not be able to accommodate every family member, but the majority of the people living in the home should be able to comfortably use the hardware you choose. Think long-term for this as well. Will family members’ mobility possibly decrease in the upcoming years? If so, think about the best design for ease of use in case that happens. Hardware that is too big and sticks out too far from the lower cabinets can cause an issue since clothing could get caught easily and knees could be bruised. At the same time, you should ensure the gap between the cabinet and hardware is not too small and large enough for your hand to comfortably grip the knob or pull.

The position of the new hardware is also very important to consider since it affects how difficult the replacement project is to complete. For example, will changing from bars to knobs or vice versa involve changing the number of or placement of the existing holes in the cabinets and drawers? Adding a new hole and filling in holes from previous hardware can be done fairly easily. However, you need to be aware of the extra work and time it adds to the project.

To help with your decision making, get a sample of the style you are considering before you buy a full set. This can help you see if it really is the best fit for you. Color can be hard to match, and size can be distorted in a picture. Taking a sample home can make it easier to see what style fits best.

Switching up your hardware style is a simple way to enhance the look and accessibility of your cabinets. Once you decide on your new set, get a few extras of each style you chose to have on hand in case you need to replace them later. Enjoy your new hardware and the updated look of your cabinets.
