A Guide to Decking Materials

Enhance your outdoor space with a gorgeous new deck! When building a deck, the first thing to consider is which material you should use. Now, there are more options for decking materials than ever before. There is no definitive best option when it comes to which type of material to choose, but this overview of the various types of decking materials available should help you get a sense of which might be right for you.

Wood

The vast majority of decks are built with wood. More specifically, the most popular type of wood is pressure-treated wood. This type of wood is treated with chemicals to resist hazards, such as rot, mold, and insects, so you do not have to worry about those pesky issues. Pressure-treated wood does have a tendency to crack and warp over time, which means that it will require some maintenance, such as cleaning it periodically, resealing it every so often, and applying an ultraviolet-stabilizer to protect your deck from the sun. Even so, the wood itself is an inexpensive option with a classic appearance.

Composites

Although artificial, this decking material made from wood and recycled plastic is becoming more popular. Composite decks are immune to warping, rotting, and damage from insects. Because of this, composite decks need very little maintenance. If you are going for more of a classic wood look, composite decking boards can be made to mimic the appearance of real wood. All these wonderful qualities do not come without a cost though, as composite decking boards are on the pricier side. Heat might be an issue for these decks, which have a tendency to get hot in warm weather. Be sure to look into brands that sell composite decks specially made for warm weather.

Vinyl

Yet another artificial decking material is vinyl or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Just like composite decking, these vinyl boards contain plastic. However, they do not resemble wood to the same degree as composites since they do not contain any wood. Some say that vinyl appears too plastic-like, yet it is becoming very popular due to the lack of maintenance that is required. This option is slightly more expensive than composite decking. This might be because of its ability to maintain color without fading and its higher durability to withstand scratching and chipping. Just like composites, vinyl decking has the potential to get hot. Consider looking into heat-resistant versions.

Aluminum

The rarest of decking materials, aluminum is a unique and incredibly durable option. Aluminum is resistant to insects, mold, rot, rust, etc. Even so, it is not very popular simply due to its unconventional appearance. Unlike composite decking, aluminum decking panels are not made to mimic the appearance of wood. In addition, aluminum is on the more expensive end of the spectrum for decking materials and is typically louder than other materials, magnifying footfalls and heavy rain.

Whether you prefer the traditional wood option, modern composite, trending vinyl, or unique aluminum, there is a decking material to match the needs of every household. Weigh these options and pick the one you feel would be best for you and your family. Most importantly, enjoy your new deck!
